New garage door install  (08/2005)

The project: The old doors are made out of wood and are rotting and falling apart as would be obvious if you took a close look. They most likely are the original doors that came on the 1954 home. I want to convert the double-doors into a modern one-door design. Here we go!

The all important BEFORE picture.

The fun part is destroying the old doors.

One is off, there's no turning back now!

This old door opener made so much noise it literally shook the whole house.
Time for a new one. (I love new toys).

With the doors off, it's now time to bust out the middle divider.

A sledge hammer made short work of it.

Just for ease of mind I placed a board in the middle held up with a car jack to keep the rood from sagging.

There was a lot of rotten boards and being a perfectionist I couldn't stand something being less than perfect.....so I ended up tearing the whole from of the garage off and completely replacing it all.

These were only a few of the MANY bags of garbage I had to get rid of....slow but sure.

See the large 2" x 12" x 20' board along the top? There are actually two of those up there bolted together to hold the roof from sagging. That extra support is needed since I got rid of the divider.

I love that "Great Stuff" foam. All the cracks were well sealed.

The carriage bolts were 12" long I believe. They had to go through 4, 2" boards up there.

For the garage doors I had them professionally installed. Joe Wilde didn't charge that much and I wanted a nice install into my freshly built new opening. They did a great job. Sometimes I DO pay others for their experience. It depends on the job. In this case garage doors are tricky with a lot of parts and some potentially dangerous springs to work with.

While I was at it I painted the garage and put up some new shelving. It's so great I felt like moving my bed out there after it was all done.

And here's the final product. It's so much easier getting in and out and fitting my large vehicles inside without that stupid divider. Now I just need to replace the concrete slab in front.....one of these days!
